Sophomore Year (10th Grade)

Sophomore Timeline

  • Study hard and do well in school. KEEP YOUR GPA HIGH!!! Remember, your grades count toward college and will show up on your permanent record.
  • STUDY HARD FOR YOUR GRADUATION TESTS, REGENTS!!! Keep in mind that you will not be able to get your high school diploma if you cannot pass all regent exams.
  • Try taking the most challenging courses you can.
  • Go to hyperlink “http://www.collegeboard.com” and sign up for a free student account. Once you do this, go to “My Organizer” and it will help you get through your “to-do” list for tests and applications. Take it step by step – it is easier than it looks.
  • Take the PSAT test. Your scores on this will not count when you apply to college and it is good practice for later.
  • Stay involved in extracurricular activities, such as sports, clubs, and community services.
  • Improve your science fair project from last year to reach higher levels.
  • Get a job; even if your last name is Gates and you do not have to.
  • Continue volunteering in your community.
  • Continue to explore careers and job opportunities in those careers.
  • Continue to improve and learn keyboarding and computer skills.
  • Keep reading as much as you can.
  • Continue to attend events on college campuses: plays, concerts, sporting events, etc.
  • “Job shadow” someone who does what you think you’d love to do. That means follow them around for a day.
  • Make a folder, or large envelope, marked “Grade 10 Portfolio” and save your best work in it. This should include class assignments, such as poems, artwork, and science fair projects.
  • Use your summer to attend enrichment programs, such as summer camps, summer courses, or college activities for high school students like Upward Bound. Ask your counselor for opportunities that are available to you.
