Literacy

New Literacy Standards in Common Core Learning Standards have intensified the focus on student literacy in schools across the nation.  In response to the persistent deficits that students in Buffalo face, particularly in literacy, BuffSci has created a rigorous curriculum for our students.  We are dedicated to improving the literacy in our students so that they become literate, competent citizens who are able to meet the challenges of competing in the diverse 21st century global environment.

Readers Workshop: Improving reading comprehension and fostering a love of reading for all 9th graders. This course tailors books to fit the needs and interests of individual students. It also provides time and an appropriate environment for reading. Students learn to ask questions, make connections to prior knowledge, conference with peers as well as teachers, and to be independent readers.

Annual Poetry Slam: Each year BuffSci holds a Poetry Slam which allows poets from all across Western NY express themselves and compete for the honor or Poetry Slam Champion. The event celebrates the Liberal Arts and allows students to show off their talents at writing and performing original poetry.

Annual ELA Events: Family Literacy Night, Scholastic Book Fair, Poetry Slam, Spelling Bee
