The Fifth Annual Charter School Poetry
Slam
The
Fifth Annual Charter School Poetry Slam was held on Thursday February 25, 2010
from 6-8pm. The event was a
wonderful success and featured student poet competitions, professional acts from
Chae Hawk, Toni Benjamin (aka Thunder) and Robert Pomerhn.

A
Chinese Auction and bake sale was also held. Poetry Slam Chairperson Laura Szkutak
said, “This year our attendance was around 120 people and we had entries from
over 150 students from five different charter schools.” Indeed, the student finalists faced
tough competition and it was difficult to even make it to the top twenty, much
less achieve the winning prizes.
First place was Andrianna Mitchell from Buffalo Academy of Science. Second, third and fourth place also went
to students from
Buffalo
Academy: Matthew Daniels, Patrick Littles and
Taija Crawford. The honorable
mention went to a student from
South
Buffalo
Charter
School: Sarah Szymonek. Congratulations to all of the student
participants!
