Environmental
Science Students Implement School-Wide Recycling Program.
What was the last thing you did to make life
better for the rest of the world? What
can you do to help decrease the incredible amount of waste that we produce
every single day? Why don’t we
have a program in place that helps us to do these things, when it seems so
easy?

These are questions that the students of Mr.
Wheat’s two environmental science classes asked amongst themselves at the
beginning of the school year.
Throughout the semester each class had grown to understand and recognize the
way humans can impact the planet negatively.
They explored some very simple and effective ways that this negative impact can
be lessened and decided it was high time we made some changes at B.A.S.C.S.

We noticed that not everyone in the building
was recycling—a practice that helps decrease landfill waste and can save our
school money. Under the guidance
of Mr. Wheat students researched our current recycling program and decided that
we could make a major improvement by having recycling bins in each classroom.
With their idea, they joined together and petitioned the administration
to purchase recycling bins for the entire school.
The administration
answered their call and the students received a grant that was used to purchase
100 bins to be placed in every classroom.
Later, Isaac Burns designed a logo for the project which was made into a
stencil. Many students such as
Brittany Mack, Marcel Hutcherson, Claudio Olympio, Rodney Carmichael, Jamella
Washington and JaQuan Combs helped to hand paint each bin with our new logo.
As the first class was moving into a new semester, the current
environmental science class picked up where the previous had left off and
delivered bins to each classroom in the building and continues to empty them on
a weekly basis.

The
project rollout was a success and since then we have seen much more school wide
interest and involvement in recycling.
Students from the class have realized that if you want to see a change you can
take the steps to make it happen. What
will be their next project? Currently
they are working on applying for a grant from Pepsi to improve decrease waste
in the cafeteria. Best of luck to
these students in their future endeavors.
