Students
at BASCS Observe HIV/AIDS Awareness with A Day of Silence
On Friday, February 26, 2010, students in grades 7 – 12 staged an
HIV/AIDS Social Justice Day – a Day of Silence. Students paid $2 to dress down
and wore 2 strips of tape to cover their mouths. The silence represented the
anger and frustration over the lives lost due to HIV/AIDS. In the days leading
up to February 26th, BASCS students heard daily announcements giving statistics
on the needless lives lost and other information specific to HIV/AIDS. Mr.
Unlusoy, the Director of the school is proud of BASCS’ participation and the
willingness of his students to take such a stand and align themselves with such
an important issue as HIV/AIDS.

Students in the ADVANTAGE afterschool program painted signs that
were displayed throughout the school. The students who participated dressed
down if they paid $2.00, and the monies raised will be donated to the BLCA of
Buffalo. The National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, Inc.’s mission is to
inform, coordinate and organize the volunteer efforts of the indigenous Black
leadership, including clergy, elected officials, medical practitioners,
business professionals, social policy experts, and the media to meet the
challenge of fighting HIV/AIDS in their local communities.
